Traditional lemonade is made with a lot of sugar so I replaced that with a healthier alternative: honey or agave nectar and went on to enjoy a cool, sweet, tart refreshing drink - sans empty sugar calories.
1/2 cup of honey or agave nectar
1 cup of hot water
1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice (6 lemons)
4-6 cups of cold water
Ice cubes
Fruit or herbs to garnish (raspberries, lemon slices even mint works great!)
Heat honey/agave with one cup of hot water in a saucepan on medium heat.
At the same time squeeze the juice from about 6 lemons to yield about a cup of juice.
Once the honey dissolves let the syrup cool a bit before mixing with the lemon juice and the remaining water (you can use more or less depending on how sweet you'd like the taste)
Chill in the fridge for at least half an hour and serve with ice cubes and fruit to garnish.
This recipe is best enjoyed on a gorgeous spring or summer day preferrably on a patio or deck ;)
